About the lecturer

The humanitarian landscape that emerged as a response to the “European refugee crisis” in 2015 in Greece included, apart from large-scale humanitarian actors, grassroots groups, and independent volunteers. In my talk I will reflect on elements of this solidarity boom, and I will address the following questions: What was the fertile ground that enabled the growth of these humanitarianisms? Why did Greece attract all these volunteers? Why do some crises evoke our compassion and solidarity and others do not? Finally, I will refer to the criminalization of solidarity and the growth of hostility towards refugees in the country in the last years.
