Ethical guidelines for anthropologists

Anthropologists in Latvia are mostly guided by the ethical guidelines of the American Anthropological Association (AAA), the Association of Social Anthropologists of Great Britain and the Commonwealth of Nations (ASA) and the Latvian Association of Sociologists (LSA). In addition, each university, research institute, and company has its own research ethics review procedure. Taking into account the specifics of ethnographic field work, anthropology students are prepared to solve complex ethical issues concerning the researcher's responsibilities, building relationships with research participants, funders, colleagues and other stakeholders, informed consent, respectful professional attitude, fair representation of participants, confidentiality of participants, and data security. As a member of the Council of World Anthropological Associations, LAB follows the recommendations of its WCAA Ethics Task Force.
