Discussion: “Anthropologists in the Territory of Political ‘Comfort’ and ‘Discomfort’”



On January 30, at 5:00 PM, the Latvian Association of Anthropologists will host a discussion - “Anthropologists in the Territory of Political ‘Comfort’ and ‘Discomfort’” at the AsiaRes Reading Room of the National Library of Latvia. The event will explore the relationship between science and politics.


The discussion will feature social anthropologists Aivita Putniņa, Associate Professor at the University of Latvia; Andris Šuvajevs, Member of the 14th Saeima; Ieva Raubiško, human rights advocate; and Kārlis Lakševics, researcher at the University of Latvia. The discussion will be moderated by Mārtiņš Daugulis, Lecturer at Riga Stradiņš University and co-founder of the analytics and advisory group PowerHouse Latvia.


Participants will share their experiences of engaging with various perceptions of how research results could be applicable for example, in decision making. Topics will include academic and institutional violence, housing policy, and human rights issues. The discussion will also address how research interacts with power dynamics, cultural traditions, and the local governance system.
